Women in Irish History - NLI Research Guide

Dr Sonja Tiernan has compiled a Research Guide on Women in Irish History for the National Library of Ireland.

The guide commences with some information on Finding Aids at the National Library and then proceeds to list those documents pertinent to women in Irish history that are held in the National Library of Ireland, Dublin.  The lists are organised thematically, into the following categories: literature & theatre, music and the arts, politics, political organisations, religion, academia, diaries and personal papers. There is also a helpful list of additional sources.

Some of the papers relating to Irish women that are held in the National Library include:

  • Maria Edgeworth - Anglo-Irish author
  • Countess Constance Markievicz - Irish Nationalist, painter and actress
  • Hanna Sheehy Skeffington - women’s suffrace movement
  • Cumman na mBan (League of Women)
  • Mary O’Connell’s letters - 600 letters between Mary and Daniel O’Connell

Take a look at the complete list in the Research Guide on Women in Irish History.
