The surname Valentine originates from England, and comes from the Latin
valens, which means ‘strong’ or ‘healthy.’
It has never been common in Ireland; McLysaght notes that it was introduced to this country when a Valentine family arrived from England in the mid-seventeenth century.
It is most frequently found in Wicklow and surrounding counties.
